Personal statement: After a career teaching and writing in the field of philosophy, I turned my hand to fiction. The two kinds of writing are not as different as they might seem at first, because literature provides opportunities to explore ideas by means of plot and character. Whether in philosophy or fiction, I like to explore sense experience and emotional responses. Savoring Disgust: The Foul and the Fair in Aesthetics concerns the appeal of disgust when it is aroused by works of art (and even on occasion by foods). Making Sense of Taste: Food and Philosophy explores the gustatory sense and its aesthetic features. Things: In Touch with the Past, examines how the sense of touch and proximity to old artifacts can deliver encounters with times gone by. I also analyze gender and its influence on philosophy in Gender and Aesthetics. My first novel, Charlotte's Story, (2021) is historical fiction that imagines how Charlotte Lucas might have lived outside the pages of Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The second, Little Follies: A Mystery at the Millennium, (2023) is a thriller set in Krakow, Poland. A dual timeline historical novel, Riddle of Spirit and Bone, will be released in 2025. In 2024, I co-edited a short story collection, Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women.
